About This Image

When it was completed in 1879 the Solano was the world's largest railroad ferry steamer, built to carry entire trains across the Carquinez Strait between Benicia and Port Costa, California. This was a vital connector for train lines running from Sacramento to Oakland (San Francisco), and the Solano was the busiest train ferry in the world.

Watkins made a stereo view from the same camera position, and this monocular view still has a strong stereoscopic feel.
