About This Image

Signed and dated on verso in pencil. A very early example of one of Steccati's original photograms and experiments.

Born in Oakland, CA on Aug. 21, 1916. Steccati obtained his B.A. degree at the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1938. He then taught for five years in the high schools of Berkeley and Antioch. He exhibited at the San Francisco Art Association in 1940, and studied with Laslo Moholy Nagy and Georgy Kepes that year. In the summer of 1941 he studied with the artist Fernand Leger.

In 1945 after a stint in the Navy as a photographer, he formed a photography partnership with Dean Stone. He photographed many important people, including three Presidents, Truman, Eisenhower and Reagan. He retired in 1990. But even in retirement he continued experimenting in art photography. He exhibited at the Tokyo Museum of Art (1982-85) and help illustrated two books published by Shufunotomo, Tokyo.

The husband of artist Alva Tofanelli, he died in Oakland on Sept. 9, 2004.

The Oakland Museum of California holds his studio's archive. His work is on display as part of the permanent collection at UCSF Mount Zion Hospital, and is featured in many other institutional and private collections.

Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania buyers must pay appropriate local sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges.
