With Picture Post caption and photographer's credit along with other stamps on verso. Albert "Bert" Hardy was born in London on May 19, 1913. He learned to take photographs at the age of 14.He began to photograph for the Picture Post in 1941, just before WWII. His dramatic images of the London Blitz, the D-Day Allied landings in France, the liberation of Paris and the crossing of the Rhine helped make his reputation as a talented young photographer.He continued to work for the Picture Post until 1957, documenting post-war England and the 1950s. After leaving Picture Post Hardy became one of the most successful advertising photographers until his retirement in 1964 to his farm in Oxted.Both Edward Steichen ("Post-War European Photography" and "Family of Man") and Otto Steinert ("Subjektive Fotografie" and "Subjektive Fotografie 2") used Hardy's images extensively in their most important exhibitions.Hardy died in 1995.He is included in the International Center of Photography's Encyclopedia of Photography and Contemporary Photographers. He is also in the George Eastman House and Auer and Auer databases. His work is held in the collections of many institutions, including the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center in Austin, TX and the Northlight Gallery in Tempe, AZ.
