About This Image

In the ivorytype process, a photographic image was transferred to imitation ivory or to glass back with ivory-tinted paper. These were popular in the 19th century, and were intended to resemble a painting on ivory. The gentleman pictured in this portrait is very well dressed and photographed in an elaborate studio setting, with a heavy red curtain draped elegantly behind him. The hand-coloring is carefully done.

"Reed Beeder" is etched into the top of the plate.
