Be-hold's catalog/internet absentee auction No. 43 will end on Friday, March 26th. Most bidding will take place on the website, as part of "On-line-auction week" (see above story). As usual for these auctions, it contains a mixture of historical and artistic material, from daguerreotypes to 20th-century prints.
Daguerreotypes range from an exceptional abstract ¼-plate of a gravestone (minimum bid $12,000) and a great ¼-plate of a family with black servant, through a large collection of family portraits, mostly connected with Virginia, by makers such as Plumbe, Broadbent, Partridge, Jacquith. Historical material includes military history--a brilliant ¼-plate ambrotype of an elegant Albany corps, and a full-plate richly colored 'Ivorytype' by McClees of Philadelphia of a military pioneer.
Western material is always strong. There are rich oversized platinum prints of Indians by Rinehart, an important album of Indians from Glacier Park by Roland Reed (minimum $10,000) and a great set of boudoir cards of Wyoming cowboy life by Kirkland ($15,000). Modern prints include works by Man Ray, Minor White, Clarence John Laughlin and John Baledessari. Subjects from the arts are represented by prints by Cartier-Bresson, Clara Sipprell, Karl Struss and George Platt-Lynes.
