A major auction of photography, entitled "Epreuves choisies, regards vers l'est", will be held during Paris Photo on Thursday, November 18th at Drouot Montaigne by Binoche Renaud Giquello. While the 249-lot auction is focused on photographs from the East, particularly Russia, it will also have a wide range of top vintage work from the 19th and 20th centuries. Drouot Montaigne is at 15 avenue Montaigne in the 8th arrondissement. The auction will begin at 6 pm, November 18th, but you can preview that day at Drouot Montaigne or earlier at Serge Plantureux's offices at 4, rue Vivienne in the 2nd arrondissement.

Included in the 19th-century portion of the sale are important daguerreotypes, calotypes, salt and albumen prints by the likes of Richebourg, Sabatier-Blot, Le Gray, Marville, Durandelle (early prints) and both Cuveliers. There is also important travel photography, primitive Italian salt prints, Russian calotypes, a vintage portrait of Nicolas II by the Tsarina, Gogol's 1883 Memoires d'un fou illustrated by albumen prints (Shapiro), and an unknown portrait of a very young Franz Kafka on the occasion of his Barmitzva.

Twentieth-century images include important vintage work and images of Brancusi, Lebedev, Chagall and Telingater; nudes by Grinberg; a 75 foot long 1933 panoramic view of every building on Ligovsky Prospekt, Leningrad; rare 1930 Man Ray vintage bondage images for Seabrooks; and images by Robert Capa, Ilse Bing, and Henri Cartier-Bresson (including 1932 prints), Dora Maar, Jerzy Kujawski (a unique hand-colored photogram), early pictorialist/modernist work by Russians Suischow-Paola and Shterenberg; photographs of the Leningrad Underground.
