Photo is mounted on board; is signed “Imogen Cunningham 1929” lightly in pencil on the recto; and with a studio label on the verso. It glows very lightly in the highlights, so probably early to late 1950s.
As a fellow dealer who has handled a number of vintage and early Cunningham photographs, Paul Hertzmann emailed me: "I would estimate the print to date from the late 1950's. All the pictures you sent conform to pictures we’ve previously had that we were able to date conclusively as late '50s, early '60s. For me, the ultimate clue is the two typed words "Two Callas," as it would seem that Cunningham was very frugal in changing typewriter ribbons and over time many of the lower case letters got jammed up and were unclear. The 'o' 'a' & 's' are all quite clean and distinct, so along with the paper, the placement of the signature, the handwriting and the mount board, it sufficient evidence for me to feel confident that it's ca. late '50s."
An early and exceptional print. Provenance: Photographer; Witkin Gallery; Evon Streetman.
