A double portrait of Cocteau and his dearest friend, Marcel Khill, who was killed in WWII. According to Francis Steegmuller in Jean Cocteau: The Mirror and The Mask, Cocteau's handsome half-Algerian companion traveled around the world with him. The pair wrote Tour du Monde en Quatre-vingt Jours. Khill looks devotedly and with amusement at Cocteau, while Cocteau seems to be distracted by events in the room. A head pops in the frame on the right edge and a medley of shadows and figures, real and otherwise make up the rest of the surreal composition.
