The New Primrose Gold Mine was located near the present day city of Germiston and was part of a string of towns that sprung up to exploit the gold reef that was discovered. The material in the foreground appears to be felt, used to extract the gold after it had been leached out of the ore using cyanide, a process developed and favoured in that part of the world. In the mid-section are what look like wash tables. Behind that is a huge cylindrical rig in which the pulverised ore was washed over with the leach. This information was provided to us by a gentleman who was originally from the region and photographed the mines along this gold reef. Strong print with a very modern feel.
