Franz Senkin (1902-1955) was a Viennese painter, photographer and commercial artist. In 2007 the Neue Galerie Graz, Hofgalerie exhibited his work for the first time after his death. As in his private life Senkin attempted to work artistically in a very open way in the avant-garde society without any restriction, and his work clearly reflects this approach. He constantly experimented in his art.
Apart from his collages, small paintings and designs, it was above all photography that excited him. It was also in this media that he obtained his most outstanding results. Senkin occasionally painted very traditional, sometimes expressive and carefully arranged landscapes, which contradicted his otherwise avant-garde mindset. After 1945 he made very large collages, which attacked the insanity of war and the Nazi rule in a very direct way. Later he dedicated himself to surrealism in his imagery, which was very strongly sexually motivated.
