James A. Clayton was born in Derbyshire, England, October 20, 1831, the son of John and Mary (Bates) Clayton, the former a lead-miner and farmer. The family came to America in 1839 and settled in Wisconsin. In 1840 he went to California gold mines, later went to Australia in search of gold, finally returned to California and became a photographer in the 1850s through 70s. When he opened his photo studio in 1853 in Santa Clara, it was only the second one in the state. Later he moved the studio to San Jose, CA. He died on April 14, 1896.
