Stephen H. Waite (1832-1906), who operated a studio in Hartford CT, is known for a photograph he took of African-American orator and abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
He was born in Massachusetts and as a young man was friends with Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Theodore Parker. He opened his Hartford studio in 1863 and conducted business there until 1879, when he was succeeded by Charles Stuart.
He later worked as a photographer in Kansas City, and retired and died there. His work is included in the collection of the Hartford Historical Society.
