About This Image

Harry Richardson Cremer, (December 11, 1878-April 21, 1942) a gifted photographer, was the son of Wilmington photographer and lithographer Frank R. Cremer (1853-1905) and grandson of Philadelphia photographer James Cremer (1821-1893).

He was born in Philadelphia, PA. He later lived in Upper Montclair, NJ.

Shortly after high school graduation, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts for two years. H. R. Cremer made his living as a business diagnostician specializing in the import and export of products. Photography was a serious hobby, and he began exhibiting his work in 1924. He was a charter member of the Photographic Society of America and president of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts, Photography Department (now the Brooklyn Museum).

Between 1925 and 1936, he participated in over 100 photography salons. His work appeared in the American Annual of Photography from 1926 through 1929 and then again in 1932.

The 1930 U.S. Census listed him as the manager of a Photo Gallery, so he did turn professional for at least a few years. He took a series of photographs of fellow photographer Margaret Bourke-White in the mid-1930s.

He died in Greene, OH on April 21, 1942.

His work is in the Currier Museum of Art and was exhibited in the show, "Seeing Is Not Believing: Ambiguity in Photography", March 29-June 25, 2023.
