Vintage silver print, flush-mounted to original cardboard. Numbered 2/50 in pencil on the recto of the mount. Numbered 100N and dated 1933 in pencil on the verso possibly in artist's hand.
This photograph was given by Edward Weston to his model Fay Fuqua in 1933. Fay Fuqua attended high school with Weston's friend and dealer, Jake Zeitkin. She later followed him to Los Angeles where she worked in his gallery. Fay Fuqua posed regularly for Edward Weston and was notably the model for the famous "invented vase" in his 1928 nude study.
The 1933 session is listed in "Weston's Record Book" (page 167), including negative numbers and the number of prints made. While the planned edition was supposed to be 50 prints, Weston actually only made two prints, so this image in private hands is unique. Weston was ambitious about this series of contact prints of nudes, but never completed any of his editions, and rarely made more than a handful of prints.
The negative is in the CCP.
Provenance: Photographer to his model, Fay Fuqua; Private collection, California; Private collection, France.
