With the Rintoul & Rockwood photography studio blind stamp on mount recto. The original mount is 9-7/8 x 11-3/4 in. (25.1 x 29.8 cm.). Another print of this image is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC (Object number, NPG.76.77), where these sitters are identified. When comparing the travel schedules of some of the sitters, it appears that the 1859 date is the most likely.
Rintoul & Rockwood was a prominent 19th-century American photography studio based in New York City at 839 Broadway, and active from 1859 through the 1860s. They were known primarily for their portraiture. While most of their images were made in the small carte-de-visite format, they did also make larger views, like this one. Many famous sitters came through their studio, including William Cullen Bryant, General Winfield Scott and Washington Irving.
Their work is held in the collections of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Portrait Gallery, Library of Congress and the J. Paul Getty Museum, among many others.
