A carefully staged composition designed to convey an ethereal atmosphere and imbue these four lovely water women with a diaphanous quality. Note the how the 'water' spills from the jugs. Mount bears the photographer's name and studio address. Klary was born in 1837 in Nancy, France. He was active from the 1860s through the 1890s. At one point the studio name was Benque & Klary. A member of the telegraphic department of the French Army in 1860, Klary spent several years in Algiers. In 1863, he resigned, returned to Paris, and then London where he learned photography professionally. He opened an extensive photographic establishment in Algiers, 1865, but returned to Paris in 1879. Klary studied with W. Kurtz in New York in 1884 and then again returned to Paris when he established a studio and the "School of Practical Photography", which taught both amateurs and professionals. He also opened up a studio at 33, rue de la Régence in Brussels, Belgium. Klary's work is the collections of the George Eastman House, the University of Texas Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center and the National Gallery of Canada.
