Signed, dated, place (New York) in pencil on the recto of the mount.Born on August 18, 1933 in Buenos Aires to Polish parents while they were on a concert tour, Eva Rubinstein grew up in Paris. At the age of five years old, she took up ballet and studied with Mathilde Kszesinska.At the outbreak of WWII in 1939, she and her parents moved to the United States and later to California. The young Rubinstein studied ballet with Bolm and Bekefi, and, later in New York, with Oboukhoff and Nemtchinova. By 1950, she completed high school. She went on to study first at Scripps College and then at the theater department of UCLA. During 1952-53, she acted in productions on the West Coast.In 1953, Rubinstein moved to New York City and continued her ballet studies with the Balanchine school. She went on to act and dance on the stage in New York City, appearing in the original company of "The Diary of Anna Frank", among many other productions.In 1956 she married the noted Civil Rights and War protestor Reverend William Sloane Coffin, Jr. and moved to Amherst, MA. She took part in many of her husbands protest demonstrations. Rubinstein had three children with Coffin, but later divorced him in 1968.In 1967, Rubinstein began photographing as a student of Sean Kernan. She also went on to study at the New York Institute. She later took workshops with Lisette Model, Jim Hughes, Ken Heyman and Diane Arbus.Morgan & Morgan published some of her most important work in a monograph in 1974, entitled simply "Eva Rubinstein".From 1977-1981 she taught at the New School for Social Research. Rubinstein has had dozens of individual and group shows of her work. Her work is in the collections of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Center for Photography, the Library of Congress, the French Bibliotheque Nationale, the Israel Museum, Hermitage Foundation Museum, among many others.
