Title written in French on recto of mount.Born in Paris in 1824, Louis-Alphonse Davanne was a chemist and an important photographer. Davanne was a founding member of the SFP. He was very active in investigating new photographic processes. He succeeded Louis Robert in 1872 as the photography teacher at l'Ecole des Ponts et Chaussees. He also taught at the Sorbonne and at Arts et Metiers. He traveled and photographed broadly, including France, Italy, Germany and Algeria. Davanne was president of the Societe de Photographie from 1876 to 1901. He died in 1912.
