Signed in pencil on mount recto. Enscribed on verso "For Dody" (Dody Weston Thompson, American photographer, member of Group f/64, married to Brett Weston, assistant and friend to Ansel Adams). Provenance: artist; Dody Weston Thompson.Richard Crump Miller (August 6, 1912-October 15, 2010) was known for his iconic photographs of Norma Jeane Dougherty (Marilyn Monroe) and James Dean. He photographed many of Hollywood's biggest celebrities. Miller also documented the construction of the Los Angeles freeways.In 1941 during WWII he worked for North American Aviation, where he met Brett Weston. Pooling gas rations they were able to drive out to the Valley and photograph in their free time. He was a close friend of the Westons and photographed Brett and his father, Edward Weston.Miller was also known for his use of the carbro process to make vivid archival color carbro images. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Getty Museum and has been exhibited at that museum. It has also been shown at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum and at private galleries.His photographs appeared in a variety of magazines, including The Saturday Evening Post, Life magazine, Time magazine and others.
