Robert Asman (1951, Washington DC--2020, Asheville, NC) was a craftsman, educator, and artist. He was the owner/operator of Asman Custom Photo, an exclusively black and white photo lab that had operated in downtown Philadelphia for over 20 years. He also taught at Drexel University, University of the Arts, and at the University of Pennsylvania.
As a student, he received a BA from Catholic University in Washington DC and an MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
At the beginning of 2000 Asman wrote that he "started to formalize my work in the city (Philadelphia) and dedicated myself to this project for a decade to trap on film and paper, photographically the sights of beauty, mystery, irony, metaphor, humor and ubiquitous history permeating this unique urban environment."
He passed away in 2020 after a long illness.
