Titled on the verso on paper label: "Log Jam: At Dalles of St. Croix, June 1886, estimated at One Hundred and Fifty Million Feet" and with the photographer's name and address. A group of 11 men stand amidst the logs, and others are on the span of the bridge in the background.
Sanford Church Sargent was born in Kenyonville, NY, on February 5, 1851. The photographer eventually established his Sargent's Emporium of Art in Taylor Falls, MN. The photographer took stereos and large views--up to mammoth plate size--of the Dalles at St. Croix and the general area, and was active there from the 1870s to early 1900s. He died in Los Angeles, CA, on December 14, 1914.
According to one obituary, he reportedly had been living in California the last 12 years of his life, but there is some indication that was incorrect and that he had first moved to Wisconsin, according to the Wisconsin Historical Society's photographer database. He may have worked in partnership there the first two years in LaCrosse, WI, with a photographer named Munyon, and then moved to Osceola, WI, in 1903 to work on his own for a few years, before moving on to California, perhaps as late as 1906. He later worked in L.A. as the Western manager for a photo supply company.
Examples of his work are in the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Minnesota Historical Society.
