Signature (V. Dijon) and title are reversed out of the negative.Victor Dijon was apparently an amateur French painter and calotypist based in the Vichy area, who was active in the early 1850s. A painting of Dijon is listed in "Catalogue des ouvrages de peinture, sculpture, architecture, gravure et lithographie des artistes vivants (Strasbourg) - 1840-1898."Prints by Dijon are held in the collections of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Musee d'Orsay. As the Metropolitan Museum notes on its website, "Although made by a virtual unknown, this photograph (in the Met's collection) possesses the aesthetic sophistication and technical mastery of the most advanced works of the 1850s. Unlike his Parisian counterparts, however, this artist exploited the large scale and dramatic lighting commonly reserved for the depiction of monumental architecture and historic statuary for a rustic, vernacular scene."
