About This Image

First Edition, with 13 pages of text; one engraved plan of the chateau; 12 chromolithographs of tiles, tapestries, and painted patterns in the interior rooms; 35 large Woodburytypes, printed by Blaise of Tours and photographed by Séraphin-Médéric Mieusement (Folio), water stained red morocco portfolio. A total of 60 plates. Published by Ducher & Cie., Paris, 1875. Fairly scarce publication. Size refers to the entire page. The photo plates themselves are 9-1/2 x 7 inches, or the reverse. This important and historical royal chateau started as a Roman fortress on the banks of the river Loire. The photographs show exterior and interior views of this Renaissance chateau and are fine examples of the clarity and attention that the French have always paid to architectural photography. The earliest subterranean remains of the original fortress of Blois are dated no later than the 9th century. At the time of this study it was an eclectic composition of architectural styles dating from the Gothic 13th century to the 17th century classicism. Seen throughout the buildings are symbols of the kings who considered the chateau as their residency; the porcupine emblem for Louis XII and the Salamander of Francois I.Some light water staining mostly on the top of some of the text pages. A bit of soiling and light foxing on some margins. Photographs are mostly very good and where there is staining on a page it doesn't affect the photos. There are copies in the French Biblotheque Nationale, the U.S. Library of Congress, the National Art Library (UK), Cornell University Library, and Royal Institute of British Architects.

Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania buyers must pay appropriate local sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges.
