About This Image

Image shows a crudely set up telescope that has been designed to take pictures. The temporary structure has triangular roof flaps that were used by both the French and British in their portable observatories. The frame within a frame look, especially with the crudity of the frame, adds a certain look of modernism to the image.Provenance: a group of images from Jules Janssen, noted photographer/astronomer (1824-1907). Title is written in ink in French (Lunette photographique equatoriale). Despite that notation the picture was apparently taken just south of Paris (5 or 10 degrees) prior to the telescope being moved to its eventual equatorial location.Used in the exhibition: Astronomical: Photographs of Our Solar System and Beyond, January 31- May 17, 2015, Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona, Tucson.
