Boulat was born June 3, 1924 in the small village of Saint-Marne and began his career at the Paris magazine Samedi Soir in 1945. His photograph of a tornado over Paris was published in Life in 1953 where he later worked under contract from 1956 until 1972. He died January 11, 1998. The Pierre and Alexandra Boulat Grant, awarded to a photographer whose "story must be told but that cannot find support from within the media" was established by his widow, Annie, after the death of their daughter, also a photojournalist, in 2007.
