Funke's daughter, Miloslava Rupesova, has signed and written a note in pencil on the verso indicating that the photograph was by a student of her father's from the Czech State School of Graphic Arts in Prague and from her father's collection. The photographer's name is written by the photographer in the upper left corner in pencil.Jaroslav Ferák was born in 1905 in Vienna. He was a student of Funke in the School of Arts and Crafts (Skola umeleckych remesiel) in Bratislava from 1932 to 1935. This school was very modernist in its approach and was sometimes called "the Bauhaus of the East". There is, in fact, a book about the school called "Das Bauhas im Osten" by Anna Susanne, published by Gerd Hatje, Stuttgart, 1977. Students of many nationalities came to study there and it was highly influential in Eastern Europe.Jaroslav Ferák is mentioned in the book "Skola moderneho videnia - Bratislavska sur 1928-1938" by Iva Mojzisova, Artforum, Bratislava 2013. His photographs were exhibited in the Bratislava City Museum during the Month of Photography in Bratislava. Photographs directly from Funke's estate are very rare.
