This is a very rare Chalon image that is not in all the Chalon albums, although it is in the Col. Lepic album at the Musee de l'Armee, Paris. The individuals are identified as Le Lieutenant de Vaisseau de Champagny, le Capitaine Friant, le Prince Murat, and le Colonel Lepic.Le Gray was court photographer for Napoleon III and was commissioned to document the peacetime maneuvers organized by the Emperor in the summer of 1857 following the French involvement in the Crimean War. The Emperor gave presentation albums to the senior officers of the maneuvers, of which only 15 are recorded in institutional and private collections.See: Lacaille, et. al., Une Visite au Camp de Chalons sous le Second Empire, Photographies de Messieurs Le Gray, Prevost... (Musee de l'Armee, Paris, 1996), p.65.
