About This Image

Provenance: Artist's widow; stock of the publisher which republished "Paris la Nuit"; Vanves flea market; Librairie Adnan Sezer.Brassai's widow republished the book as a blockbuster art book in 1987, which sold in mass. This ferrotyped photograph was one of the prints that were the work prints used to make the new edition of the book. They are directly from Brassai's negatives, and not copy prints, but some were enlargements, because the reedited book was not an exact reprint of the original, but rather a large, public coffee table book. Some of the prints are on thicker and older paper which, according to one expert, were probably printed earlier and given to the publisher by Brassai’s estate or widow as working prints.See: Brassai, Paris de Nuit, p.39; Brassai, Paris by Night, pl.39, p.39.
