Two very rare CDV's relating to William Gladstone, prime minister of England.Mayall had opened the 224 Regent St, address that is on the portrait cdv in 1853, and then turned over that studio to his eldest son, Edwin. He opened his new photographic portrait studio at 90-91 Kings Road, close to the then recently built Grand Hotel, on July 18, 1864, so it may be that the eldest son Edwin could have taken this portrait.William Ewart Gladstone FRS FSS (December, 29, 1809 – May 19, 1898) was a British statesman and Liberal politician. In a career lasting over 60 years, he served for 12 years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, spread over four terms beginning in 1868 and ending in 1894. He also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer four times, serving over 12 years.Gladstone's own political doctrine, which emphasized equality of opportunity and opposition to trade protections, came to be known as Gladstonian liberalism. His popularity among the working-class earned him the sobriquet "The People's William".In the general election in 1868, Gladstone's South Lancashire constituency had been broken up by the Second Reform Act into two: South East Lancashire and South West Lancashire. Gladstone stood for South West Lancashire and for Greenwich, it being quite common then for candidates to stand in two constituencies simultaneously. It was fortunate that he had been nominated in Greenwich, which is shown in the second very rare cdv, To his great surprise he was defeated in South Lancashire but winning in Greenwich was able to remain in Parliament.He then became Prime Minister for the first time and remained in the office until 1874. Evelyn Ashley recorded that he had been felling a tree at Hawarden when brought the news that he was about to be appointed Prime Minister. He broke off briefly to declare 'My mission is to pacify Ireland' before resuming his exertions.After Gladstone became prime minister for the first time, many reforms were passed during his first ministry, including the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland and the introduction of secret voting.
