About This Image

Rare and early printing of important image from Frank's Americans series, reminiscent of Lange's Migrant Mother. Signed in ink by the artist, and titled, dated '1956' and annotated "From Americans" in ink in an unidentified hand on the verso. Passes black light test.

Provenance: the artist; to Dennis Wheeler. Dennis Wheeler, the critic, curator, writer and film director, and his wife Susan invited Robert Frank to their home in 1976 to interview him for an article Dennis was writing for the Canadian art journal, Criteria. Following this interview, Wheeler and Frank became good friends often writing letters to each other and speaking on the phone. The laughter they shared and the plans they had to coordinate on various projects were cut short with Wheeler's death in 1977. This work was a gift to Dennis Wheeler from Frank following this newfound friendship, along with several other important early prints.

See: Robert Frank (Aperture, 1979), p.63; Frank, The Americans (Scalo), pl.15.
