She was a member of the Photo League, the legendary New York based group of photo documentarians, and she studied at the New School for Social Research.Her professional career began in the 1940s, and she specialized in photographing children.She was among the 20 women photographers whose work was included in the anthology, "Women of Vision" in 1982. Stone has published several books and the Museum of the City of New York, the Chicago Fine Arts Museum, the Center for Creative Photography, the George Eastman House and the National Gallery of Canada, among others, have holdings of her work.
