Framed.Akbar Padamsee (born April 12, 1928, Bombay) was a contemporary Indian artist and painter, considered one of the pioneers in Modern Indian painting along with Raza, Souza and M.F. Hussain. He was still a student at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai when the Progressive Artists' Group of Bombay was created, founded by Francis Newton Souza with, among others, Jamini Roy, Thyeb Mehta, Maqbool Fida Husain, Sayed Haider Raza and Vasuedo S. Gaitonde. Though he never became a member of the Group, Padamsee was recognized as a fellow traveler.Over the years he has also worked with various mediums from oil painting, plastic emulsion, water color, sculpture, printmaking, to computer graphics, and photography. He also has worked as a film maker, sculptor, photographer, engraver, and lithographer. Today his paintings are among the most valued by any modern Indian artists. His painting "Reclining Nude" was sold for $1,426,500 at Sotheby's in New York on March 25, 2011.After graduating in 1948, he moved to Paris in 1951, where he met Stanley William Hayter, one of his future mentors, thanks to whom he joined Atelier 17. In 1952, he was awarded a prize by Andre Breton, on behalf of the Journale d’Art. His first exhibition was held in 1953 at Galerie Saint Placide, and was followed by many more worldwide. His works were also exhibited at the Biennales of São Paulo, Tokyo and Venice.He was awarded the Lalit Kala Akademi Fellowship (Lalit Kala Ratna) by the Lalit Kala Akademi, India's National Academy of Arts, in 1962; the Kalidas Samman from the Madhya Pradesh Government in 1997 for Plastic Arts; and the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honor in 2010. He has also been awarded several other fellowships, including J.D. Rockefeller Foundation and Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship among others.He passed away in 2020.In his black and white photographs he uses light to create dimension.
