Signed and dated at lower right recto on the mount.Born in Nagyvarad, Hungary, in 1916, Berko was orphaned as a child and sent to Germany where he was raised by family friends who were involved with the Bauhaus movement. With the rise of the Nazis, he moved to England where he studied philosophy. A self-taught photographer, Berko worked under Otto Emil Hoppe in his early twenties. He lived in Dresden, Frankfurt, Berlin and Paris before moving to India in 1938 where he worked first as a camera man and later as a photographer and filmmaker. He also worked closely with a British ad agency in Bombay, making documentaries for a list of clients that included John Grieson and the British-India Army. His photographs began to appear in such magazines as Lilliput, U S. Camera and Du.After the war Berko accepted an invitation from Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, one of his Bauhaus associates, to teach film at the Chicago Institute of Design. In 1949 he moved to Aspen, Colorado, to work with Walter Paepcke's Container Corporation and to be the official photographer for the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies.
