Le Gray was court photographer for Napoleon III and was commissioned to document the peacetime maneuvers organized by the Emperor in the summer of 1857 following the French involvement in the Crimean War. The Emperor gave presentation albums to the senior officers of the maneuvers, of which only 15 are recorded in institutional and private collections. This example is from the album of an aide de camp to the Emperor, Captaine Louis-Charles August Morand, one the best and one of the few albums to have been divided. (Musee de l"Armee, Paris, 1996), p.57. Framed. Provenance: photographer; Captaine Louis-Charles August Morand to his descendants; Harry Lunn; Alexander Novak.
