A caption in ink on the verso reads, " Amerika U. S. Juneau in Alaska". The U.S. bought much of what is now Alaska from Russia in 1867. It was later organized as a territory on May 11, 1912 and admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.
