About This Image

The dancer Grete Freudenreich posing in avant-garde costume.Born in Klagenfurt, Albin Kobé (also known as Cobé and active 1912-1935) became the managing director of the Vienna Residenzatelier after completing his photography training with Hermann Heydenhauss in Vienna and Hugo Erfurth in Dresden. In addition to portraits, this studio, which had been resident in Fleischmarkt since 1914, increasingly took nude photographs in the 1920s. This was followed by a time-typical development that took place in the context of various factors: the heyday of the new dance movement in Vienna, the life-reforming nudism and the emergence of illustrated magazines in which stars and starlets from theater, dance, film and revue were depicted in glamorous photographs (usually next to gossip stories, fashion articles and modern lifestyle).
