About This Image

A similar photo, made during the same studio session, is illustrated in Ken Jacobson's book, "Odalisques & Arabesques: Orientalist Photography 1839–1925" 2007, p. 156 (Plate 55). The image in Jacobson's book is a calotype, while this is an even rarer albumen print. All were taken in Sebah's Constantinople studio and were specially commissioned for the 1873 International Exhibition. Fine composition; the jewelry, shoes and unique proportions of the clothing are a visual feast.
