About This Image

Night games, now a tradition in baseball, were made possible only after the advent of impressive steel light towers like this one--the first ever to grace Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. It stands 150 feet tall, and boasts 132 lights. The first night game was played in the field on June 4, 1940.
