On Tuesday, September 16, Freeman’s will present its annual Photographs & Photo books auction in Philadelphia, PA. The 130-lot auction will begin at 11 am.
Top lots from the sale include two Irvin Penn photographs, "Sculptor’s Model" ($20,000-25,000) and "Camel Pack" (18,000-25,000), two Diane Arbus prints, including "Masked Woman in Wheelchair" (each $10,000-15,000) and Sally Mann's "Untitled" (from her Southern Landscapes series) at $15,000-25,000.
Photographs in a range of price points and from the entirety of photographic history can be found in the September 16 auction. The earliest period of photography is represented with works by William Henry Jackson "Church of San Miguel, Santa Fe, N.M.", Francis Frith's "The Statues of Memnon, Plain of Thebes", ($8,000-12,000), 30 prints by early Philadelphia photographer Frederick Gutekunst ($2,500-3,500), Andrew Joseph Russell's "Devil’s Gate, Weber Canyon" and, in following with the great success of cased images in Freeman’s auctions, there are a number of interesting lots of daguerreotypes and ambrotypes.
Those interested in mid-century photographers will be pleased to find several lots by Aaron Siskind, Nathan Lerner, Wynn Bullock, Minor White, Henri Cartier-Bresson Jerry Uelsmann and Paul Caponigro. Other important lots include W. Eugene Smith's White First Communion Dress; George Tice's White Castle;
The contemporary portion of the auction features photographs by Joel-Peter Witkin, Sebastiao Salgado, Nan Goldin, Lorna Simpson, Eileen Neff, Roger Ballen and a nearly six-foot tall collage by Mike & Doug Starn ($4,000-6,000).
