Phillips, de Pury & Luxembourg has grabbed the spotlight at this Spring's New York City photo auctions by adding two special sales to its regular auction: Soho Partnership's 10th Anniversary Benefit Auction of Photographs to be held Monday, April 21, and the Seagram Collection of Photographs, Part I, Friday, April 25 and Part II, Saturday, April 26. The regular photography auction will be held Thursday, April 24 and Friday, April 25.
The Seagrams collection was sought by each of the NYC auction houses, but Phillips got the plum, which includes nearly 700 images by artists as far ranging as Walker Evans, Louis Faurer, William Eggleston, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Bernd & Hilla Becher. The collection had been built beginning in the early 1970s under the direction of Phyllis Lambert. The strength of the collection is in the post-war years, although some work by important precursors, like Evans, is also included.
All three auctions can be viewed at Phillips new headquarters facility in Chelsea at 450 West 15 St, New York City. Viewing for the Soho Partnership sale is April 16-20, Wednesday-Sunday; and for the regular sale and Seagram sale the viewing is April 16-23, Wednesday-Wednesday. Viewing hours are Monday-Saturday, 10-5 and Sunday, 1-5.
