Over the years Vintage Works, Ltd. and I Photo Central have used a number of vendors in the course of business; many were average and some were just mediocre. But we have also encountered and continue to use some particularly great service companies and suppliers. None of these are a paid endorsement. I just wanted to recognize their outstanding work here, and we can recommend the following people and companies highly:
Conservation Work
For conservation work in the USA, we use:
Gawain Weaver, Gawain Weaver Conservation
45 Arroyo Rd
PO Box 33
Lagunitas CA 94938
Work: 1-415-446-9138
Work Fax: 1-415-840-7333
Before Gawain I had used Jennifer Olsen, who now works for Gawain, so I have got the best of both worlds. They are simply the cream of the crop when it comes to both photography conservation and analysis, and I use them for both. The company website has lots of fun information on photography processes, conservation and photos themselves.
In Europe I have used several photo conservators, and I have found two that do an excellent job. Both have had extensive professional experience with the top Paris museums:
Jerome Monnier, Conservation and Renovation
9 Rue Etex
75018 Paris
France

Philippe Bérard

Shipping and Freight Brokerage
For brokerage and shipping individual packages from France, we have utilized a number of companies, but one company has stood out over time:
International Logistic
Martin Ligier
16 allée des 5 Noyers
77410 Annet Sur Marne
France
Tel.: +33-1 60 94 95 35
exploit@international-logistic.fr
I have used this company for over eight years, first with the father Thierry and now with his son Martin. The service and packing has been excellent and highly professional. And for Europe shipper/brokers the cost has been consistently reasonable, compared to other alternatives. I use them to pick up and ship auction items and other purchases, particularly in Paris and other parts of France.
For my booth shipping and brokerage to Paris Photo when I was doing the show, I used a combination of Berklay Shipping in the US and Sendsio in France. For dealers shipping within, to and from Europe and the USA for shows, I can recommend both:
Dennis and Greg Klainberg
The Shipping Guys, LLC/Berklay Transport
10 Bond Street
#1-Box 329
Great Neck, NY 10021
Tel.: +1-516-872-3335
Laurent Honig, SENDSIO

Photography Insurance and Broker
For Photography Insurance, I highly recommend:
Sandra Berlin
AJG Insurance
850 Golf Road
Rolling Meadows, IL 60608
Mobile: 1-312-925-4479
Sandra has been my insurance broker for the last 15 years or so—first with Willis and now with A.J. Gallagher. She is amazing and responsive, and has always gone well beyond to provide help and support no matter the situation, and to find the best coverage for the least expensive price.
As a broker Gallagher usually handles museums and institutions, dealer and gallery insurance and personal collections valued around or over $750,000. For collections with much lower values, you might try personal coverage with either Fireman’s Fund or Liberty Mutual, which will often offer separate coverage in connection with their home owners’s policies. But if you have a bigger collection, getting a broker means that you really have someone on your side legally, unlike an agent who represents the insurance company, not the insured. And I can’t think of a better one than Sandra.
Photo Appraisers
Depending on circumstances, I have used a number of photography appraisers, and I have had extensive experience with the following three, all of whom I can recommend hardily for their knowledge and professionalism:
Edward Yee, Penelope Dixon and Associates Inc.
348 West 38th Street
Suite 11E
New York NY 10018
Work: (877) 837-2777/ 646-736-7556

Framing and Matting
Garth Davidson, Garth Davidson Gallery
300 Mill St
Moorestown NJ 08057
Mobile: 1-856-235-8027
garthdavidsongallery@gmail.com
We have been using Garth for our framing and matting for over 20 years now. For extensive work, he can pick up and deliver within about an hour’s drive, which includes Philadelphia and New York City. Not only is the framing highly professional, his prices are lower than any comparable quality framer in the NYC-Philadelphia corridor. He also assists us by hanging at the NY AIPAD Photography Show, and can help hang work in your homes and offices.

Their shipping boxes are the standard for shipping framed artwork. Masterpak provides art packaging products to artists, auction houses, galleries and museums around the world, serving as the sole purveyor of OzClips® as well as the TitanStrongBox™ worldwide. Go direct here for the best pricing. Fed Ex uses their boxes, but with a big markup. There is a professional discount, including for AIPAD members; and even for non-commercial clients, there is a 20% discount on your first purchase. I think their packages generally hold up better than almost any alternative.
