Some of the earliest photographic images are of children. At times the subjects of these images were the photographer's own children or close relatives. Other images were sought by parents hoping to capture their babies precious and innocent childhood forever. But the reason for most of these image is a simple one: the subject just has always appealed to many photographers.

Whether a photographer was a major "name" in the field or not, the subject of childhood enticed them into this world of innocence.

From formal portraits to informal scenes of play, these images are tributes to the strength, beauty and positive energy of children.

Here you will find anonymous and nearly unknown photographers sharing the same internet exhibit space. From 19th-century masterworks from the likes of Southworth & Hawes, Thomas Eakins and Julia M. Cameron, to 20th-century images by Andre Kertesz (whose first photography book was on children), Henri Cartier-Bresson, Laure Albin-Guillot, Arthur Tress, Arnost Pikart, Robert Doisneau, Arnold Eagle, Ralph Meatyard, Irving Penn, Gianni Berengo Gardin, Sabine Weiss and Stanko Abadžic.

Enjoy this rebirth into an age of innocence.
