Photography Gallerist Bonni Benrubi Passes Away At Age of 59

The New York Times notice was terse:

The Benrubi and Powers families, and staff of the Bonni Benrubi Gallery, are deeply saddened to announce the death of Bonni Benrubi. Benrubi, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, on Thursday, November 29th at Cornell-Weill Medical Center in Manhattan. She is survived by her husband Dennis Powers, and sons Samuel T. and Jack B. Powers and brother Sam Benrubi. An established and respected art dealer, Benrubi founded the Bonni Benrubi Gallery in 1987. Services were held Sunday, December 2nd, at the Riverside Memorial Chapel, NYC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all donations be sent to the NYU Clinical Cancer Center, NYU Langone Medical Center, Office of Development, One Park Avenue, 17th Floor, New York, NY 10016. For more information call 212-404-3638.

Personally her death from cancer hit me hard. I had just been in communication with her by email just after Paris Photo. It must have been a very sudden event, although she reportedly had been going through chemo-therapy for about two years. Besides being a top AIPAD photo dealer, Bonni was one of what I often call "the good guys". She was always kind and helpful to me and many others. I regarded her as a friend, as well as a fellow dealer, and the loss will be felt in the field of photography and the New York gallery scene, where she was a fixture for so many years. She died prematurely at only the age of 59.
