The Musée d’Orsay has purchased a photograph with a slightly blurry Charles Baudelaire in the background. It is one of only about 15 photographs with Baudelaire in them.
The previously unknown image shows the famed author leaning against a wall looking at the subject being photographed in the foreground.
Baudelaire is, of course, the noted poet and author of Les Fleurs du Mal (The Flowers of Evil).
The work, entitled Image photographique de Baudelaire, belonged to the Parisian photography and book dealer Serge Plantureux. According to L'Express, the Musée d’Orsay acquired the picture for €50,000, receiving the rest of the album to which it belonged as a gift from the dealer.
The photograph will be exhibited next November as part of an exhibition entitled "Sept ans de réflexion" (Seven years of reflection), which will highlight the Museum's latest acquisitions.
