On Friday, September 11, Skinner will present its fall Prints & Photographs auction in Boston, beginning at noon EST. Photographic works will also be on offer in a complementary Fine Art Online sale opening Wednesday, September 2, at 10 pm, and closing Tuesday, September 15, at 10 am.
Top lots from the live sale include a vintage pigment print of a dramatically lit nude by the Czech photographer František Drtikol dating from c. 1930 ($12,000-18,000); several views of New York by Berenice Abbott with the photographer's Federal Art Project "Changing New York" hand stamp ($2,000-3,000); a blue-toned carbon print of “The Terra Nova Icebound” (from Robert Scott’s 1910-11 expedition to the South Pole) by Herbert George Ponting ($2,000-4,000); a signed print of Joseph Koudelka’s “Portugal” from his “Exile” series ($5,000-7,000); and an estate print of Francesca Woodman’s “House #3, Providence,” a self-portrait taken while she was a student at the Rhode Island School of Design in the mid-1970s ($4,000-6,000).
Other important lots include Ruth Bernhard’s “Classic Torso” ($3,000-5,000); William Garnett’s “Four Sided Dune #2, Death Valley, California” ($3,000-5,000); Harry Callahan’s “Eleanor, Port Huron” accompanied by number 68 of the first edition of John Szarkowski’s "Callahan" (Aperture in association with the Museum of Modern Art, 1976) ($2,000-4,000); and Minor White’s “Dumb Face, Frost on Window, Rochester, New York” ($2,000-3,000).
Other 20th century photographers include: Ansel Adams, Ed Clark, Imogen Cunningham, Joe Deal, Doc Edgerton, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Eugene Harris, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Joel Meyerowitz, John O'Reilly, Eliot Porter, Aaron Siskind, George Tice, Jerry Uelsmann, Edward Weston and Garry Winogrand.
Contemporary offerings include a view of Hong Kong soccer fields by Japanese photographer Naoki Honjo ($1,000-1,500) and David Hilliard’s 2007 triptych “Jackie Immersed” ($2,000-3,000).
Among the Fine Art Online offerings are works by Deborah Bright, Judy Dater, Frank Gohlke, Jim Goldberg, Milton Greene, Danny Lyon, Arthur Rothstein, Carl Van Vechten, Todd Webb, Brett Weston and Marion Post Wolcott, as well as additional prints by Berenice Abbott, Imogen Cunningham and Edward Weston.
